We are pleased to welcome Tuck School of Business alum, Meera Oak (MBA ’20) as Principal for Green D Ventures, Alumni Ventures Group’s fund for Dartmouth alumni and friends.

Meera brings along financial management and operational experience from her time at Yale University to this new role. We recently caught up with Meera to learn how she came to join the Green D team.

How did you make your way to Green D Ventures? (personally, academically, professionally, etc.)

After a wide range of professional experiences at Yale University that combined the power of education and financial capital, I sought out opportunities to immerse myself in the growing ecosystem and engage with an innovative community. My time at Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth was instrumental in my exploration of the early-stage space. At Dartmouth, I worked alongside various startups and partnered with a venture studio and traditional VC fund to gain exposure to different models of venture capital. Just after graduation, I was thrilled to find an opportunity with Green D where I could continue to work with Dartmouth’s problem-solvers.

What initially sparked your interest in working at Green D?

During my time at Tuck, I traveled to Boston amongst a group of students interested in venture capital and entrepreneurship. In a sea of different venture funds, Green D made a strong case for its nuanced investment approach —  a “connected capital” community for high-growth companies.

How did your college experience and the connections made there influence your career?

In college, my liberal arts curriculum gave me an interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving. Through electives and extracurriculars, I surrounded myself with a diverse set of classmates holding different majors and perspectives. As I’ve navigated key investment decisions and career turns, I’ve leaned on this valuable network for advice. I continued to build academic and professional connections at both Yale and Tuck to enhance my approach to early-stage investing and entrepreneurship.

I’m intrigued by the way small changes can have a butterfly effect throughout major categories. Slight behavior shifts create new markets, either by introducing a new product or changing the way in which it is distributed. To this end, I’m excited to see how machine learning and AI programs empower self-service and improve personalization to transform the customer experience.

What are you most looking forward to since joining the team?

I’m excited to work with Green D and leverage our experienced network to help our founders accelerate growth and weather the unexpected. Within AVG, I’m also looking forward to building relationships across geographies and fund teams to continue providing great opportunities for our investors.

What resources do you recommend to people interested in venture capital or entrepreneurship?

I’d encourage you to let your natural curiosity drive your industry focus. Use industry blogs, tech news sites, and email newsletters to learn the most up-to-date activity, and sources like Medium to hear perspectives from experts in a specific vertical.
